Alcohols

AZUCARERA PARAGUAYA began to produce alcohols in 1913 from molasses fermentation and initially made 300,000 liters per year of rectified quality.

Botellas de AlcoholIn 1932, the firm tested the use of absolute alcohol in war planes. In the 1970s with the rapid rise in petroleum prices, Paraguay accompanied Brazil’s initiative to produce alcohols suitable as a fuel for motor vehicles. This led to the import of the first alcohol-combustion cars.

Following the trend of international prices for sugar and petroleum and the appearance of the new generation of economy vehicles in Brazil, AZPA installed a new distillery of fuel and absolute alcohol in 2002. This plant opened with a beginning capacity of 60,000 liters per day, to add to the older-plant capacity of 30,000 daily liters. Also, the first alcohol-driven car was imported to Paraguay.

Benefited by national mixing of alcohol with gasolines in 2005, AZPA lifted its production capacity to 150,000 liters per day for dehydration and 90,000 liters for fuel.

Part of the growth strategy included greater investment in sugarcane cultivation and mill expansion.

The yield and competition seen from Brazil –the world’s foremost ethanol producer—forced improvement in production returns and raw material quality, a decisive factor in determining yield.

At present, AZPA produces three types of alcohols
